Eye Integrated Pediatric Obesity TV Ad Wins Design Awards
(Greenville, NC, January 2008)
Eye Integrated produced a television ad that has been honored in several design competitions at regional, national and international levels. The television ad, called Pronunciations, is one of several spots from a campaign written, designed and produced by Eye for University Health Systems to raise awareness of the increasing incidence of pediatric obesity in Eastern North Carolina. It makes effective use of animated hand drawn type combined with a child’s voice struggling to pronounce the devastating health problems associated with obesity in children. The 30-second spot was produced completely in-house and even employed the creative director’s 11-year old daughter as the voice talent.
Most recently the TV ad was selected for a Gold Wally Award in the annual competition sponsored by Carolinas Healthcare Public Relations & Marketing organization, or “CHPRM” as it is known. Judges rated the entries based on numerous criteria such as response to issue, clarity and achievement of objectives, creativity, quality and appropriateness. Recently, the Pronunciations spot was also selected for inclusion in the national American Graphic Design Awards competition sponsored by Adobe Systems Incorporated. And at the international level, the spot has been honored with a Gold Award in the “budget not greater than $5000” category and a Silver Award in the “non-hospital health care” category from the International Davey Awards.
For more than 30 years CHPRMS has provided resources to nearly 250 members who are working in the ever-changing, dynamic healthcare industry throughout the Carolinas. Among other specific goals, the organization strives to “champion excellence within the field of healthcare communications.” In 1978 the name “Wallie” was chosen when the organization borrowed a line from Lewis Carroll’s Through The Looking Glass; the line reads “The time has come, the Walrus said…” and thus the official CHPRMS mascot became a Walrus named Wallie.
Anissa Davenport, Vice President, Marketing for University Health Systems of Eastern Carolina called to personally congratulate the staff of Eye Integrated, mentioning that the spot received “a huge round of applause when it was shown at the awards banquet!”
Competition is stiff in the American Graphic Design Awards; over 10,000 nationwide entries are considered during the judging. This popular competition has been a respected venue for over 30 years.
Additional honors for the pediatric obesity TV Ad come from The International 2007 Davey Awards. Focused on small firms with big ideas, the annual Davey Awards, inspired by the story of David and Goliath, honor "Creative Davids", those firms that utilize big ideas for their strength, rather than big budgets.
A distinguished panel of judges evaluated over 4000 entries from the best small firms throughout the world. Entries were evaluated for distinction in creative work and scored on a ten-point scale. Gold Winners typically receive a score of 9.0 or above and Silver Winners receive a score of 7.0 to 8.9.
Stanton Blakeslee, the agency’s Director of Creative Services said, “We are extremely proud of the work that we create for all of our clients, but this project was particularly special for me because I was able to work with my daughter, Ari as the talent. Her voice drove the issue home and made it very personal for me.” He went on to say that, “Most of us are parents and we’re all concerned about the health challenges facing Eastern North Carolina. The small budget didn’t deter us; we knew that we could create something really special. It’s not always about money. Sometimes it’s about creating work that will make a difference in our community and I believe we’ve achieved that. The awards are just the icing on the cake."
